WHAT ARE HORMONES?

Hormones are chemicals that are produced by glands in the endocrine system. Hormones travel through the bloodstream to the tissues and organs, delivering messages that tell the organs what to do and when to do it.

Hormones are important for regulating most major bodily processes, so a hormonal imbalance can affect a wide range of bodily functions. Hormones help to regulate; metabolism and appetite, heart rate, sleep cycles, reproductive cycles and sexual function, general growth and development, mood and stress levels and body temperature.

why are they important?

Hormones are the ever-present servants of our mental and physical balance and influence our bodies to maintain equilibrium in any moment. They enter the cells of every tissue in our bodies and our brain and therefore affect our physical and mental wellbeing because their influence is needed for every function of our existence - they lead the dance and they all serve a purpose. When they are out of balance we can experience a myriad of problems.

How do I keep mine healthy?

In this day and age of our chaotic western lifestyles it is all too easy for our hormones to be influenced in many ways that are detrimental to optimal function. Hormone imbalances occur when there is too much or too little of a hormone in the bloodstream and because of their essential role in the body, even small hormonal imbalances can cause side effects. Women have it tough, once we hit our thirties our hormone balance starts to become more elusive, mood swings become more apparent and some of us have a wilder ride than others as oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid, insulin and leptin can all start to go out of whack as we move into perimenopause and beyond.

Your body prefers to be in a state of equilibrium called homeostasis, for some of us it’s just a few tweeks that are needed, others of us need more support. I have strategies and solutions for both camps and everyone in between, it may take a little longer to get there, but my aim and purpose is, to get you there.
